Revised version of this- I had it posted earlier, noticed some weird things and fixed it. Much happier with it now.
What I thought of while listening to Stereo Hearts by Gym Class Heroes.
The pose and cell shading were some of the biggest obstacles in this one. I ended up doing solid black lineart, then going in with a mask to create the cell-shading appearance. So far I just don't like doing lineart in Illustrator as much.
5 hours of work so far into this.

My semi-final anthropomorphic animation. Still needs a few lighting tweaks, but I'm pretty satisfied. I think the story got a lot more clear than where it was at before, which was something I struggled with.

We had to read Kafka's The Metamorphosis for literature class, and then draw a scene from it. I chose the scene where the cockroach gets apples chucked at him, because that is probably a similar reaction that I'd have to a giant cockroach in my house.

I have been playing with the idea of transferring to the Art Institutes LA (probably a little too late, with less than 2 weeks before the new quarter). It's not that I haven't been satisfied with the Ai MN. I love the teachers, but I feel like I need to immerse myself in the environment I need to be in for the job I want. In Minnesota, I'm working really hard in a school whose curriculum is designed to get me a job in Minneapolis, and I'm required an internship as well, likely in Minneapolis. Neither of these are things I want. After having visited several Minneapolis studios, I haven't really felt the "click", like this is where I would be happy. And I really want an internship that will help me gain experience in what I want to do long term, which is the point, right? I look at the graduates at my current school- not too many have ventured out to CA and gotten a job. I do not want this.

Don't get me wrong. I believe that school is only part of what determines your success. Working hard and learning what YOU need to do personally are just as important. But this is what is guiding me towards wanting to leave. I want to be somewhere where what I want to do is considered employable, important... I don't know.

On top of that, Minneapolis is just full of bad juju for me personally. I don't really feel comfortable talking about it in depth, but I've had enough struggle the past year to be ready for a change of scenery. I learned who my true friends are, and I thank them for sticking by me. You will never know how important that is to me. But, as much as I will miss certain people, I need to feel excited about my life and animation and drawing, and Minnesota as a whole is not doing this.

But packing up and moving across the country is scary. I love my family, and I really can't imagine only seeing them at Christmas and maybe in the summer. They are the reason I chose to stay in Minneapolis in the first place. And LA just seems so intimidating, especially going it alone. And I want so badly to make the right choice, it's hard going somewhere blindly and knowing you can't turn around.

And now I'm rambling. I need better things to do on a Friday night, and if you've actually sat and read all this, thanks and you have more patience than I do. I will just miss certain people terribly; I'll miss my roller derby team, and I'll miss ice cream because apparently it's not as easy to find in LA.

Got back from a multitude of traveling adventures. Last July I spent a few days in New York (my first trip there!) all by myself in order to attend the Pixar masterclass with Mattew Luhn and Andrew Gordon. It was a great experience; I learned a lot, especially when story creation was discussed. It's amazing how much thought goes into every little detail in all of the movies that Pixar does.

More recently I got back from Vancouver, B.C. I was attending Siggraph for the second time. Another great experience, and definitely different from last year's Siggraph. I would highly recommend going to this, even though it's pretty pricey for non-students. I always learn a ton, meet new peeps, and of course, bring home a walking teapot. It didn't hurt that Vancouver is a gorgeous city, much prettier than L.A. was. Some of the highlights were getting to see Pixar's La Luna before its public release, a storytelling with color class featuring Kung Fu Panda 2, and many good presentations from ILM.

So in the meantime while I wait to get back to school, I definitely have a lot to work on and think about. Internship stuff, getting a good website up and running, portfolio, etc. I'll try and keep this blog updated; I know i haven't been doing a very good job (if it helps I haven't really been doing much art, due to some recently discussed business).

Just finished this up- I was trying to work with using bolder color contrast, as well as working without solid outlines again. What's challenging for me is not smoothing all my colors out perfectly; sometimes a little painterly texture is good.

Normally I don't draw the stereotypical cheerleader type. My brother described the perfect
girl for him, and after I decided she probably does not exist in real life, I figured the least I could do was draw her for him. :)

Anyway the only real reason I'm posting this is because it's one of the first attempts I've had with Illustrator's pen tool. I used it before a long time ago in a typography class, but haven't messed with it for anything art related really.

So this is my "finished" anthropomorphic animation. I was fortunate enough to have an extension on it, but it is still not as perfect as I'd like it to be. However, I think I did a good job animating the marshmallow's extreme squash and stretch; he definitely has a little personality. :)

The roller skate was for my intermediate modeling class. I am incredibly proud of this model. I spent over 20 hours on it in Maya using my own Riedell R3 as a reference.

I just started the new quarter (yay?) and so far it's going pretty well. I like my 3D animation class, and it's not as tooth-pulling-painful as I thought it would be.

But I have an environmental science class, and it's making me think a lot more about, well just stuff. The environment has always been important to me. I'm not a tree-loving hippie who wears hemp, and I eat meat. I love meat in fact. mmmmmm. Meat. But I grew up loving animals too; I still do. And I've lost a lot of that with this major. I think that our school and our major especially is very sheltered when it comes to the bigger picture. And I don't want to drop out or give up animation; I love animation. But I have been confused. Maybe Pixar is not what I want? What I want are two different things, and I guess I'm unsure how to combine them, or if I even want that.

Finally finished my school quarter and ended it with one stressful finals week! But anyway, I still have a lot more school to look forward too......

My next quarter schedule is as follows:

M/W: 3D Animation & Environmental Science

T/R: Fundamentals of IMD (Yeah I have no idea what that stands for, it's basically a beginner's web design class...?)

But lately I've been trying to learn how to skate so I can someday, hopefully get into a roller derby league. It's a fat chance, I know, considering I have the coordination and agility equal to that of a newborn fawn. My parents never really encouraged me to get into any team sports when I was a kid, and that is one thing I regret. All I can really do is draw, which isn't bad, but when you go to school all day to draw, you sometimes want a little more. I am pretty much starting from ground-zero learning skating, but it's a challenge for myself, and it's a good way to escape the frustration and all the same people I see at school everyday. I love it. Even though right now I kinda suck at it.

Finally finished my "journey begins" project. I'm pretty proud of it; I can't say I have done a whole lot of big Photoshop projects, and this turned out well.

Also working on this character on the side. He doesn't really have a story or any purpose right now, but I guess I can get to that sometime too.

I found out the other day that I will be doing another 3rd level review, except now it's at my 5th level. I am unsure how I feel about this. On one hand, it was great practice, I like receiving input on my work, and I feel like I did a great job last time. On the other hand, it was a shit ton of work, I did it less than 2 quarters ago already, and I signed up for the class not knowing ahead of time that I would have to do another review.

These days my focus has been on school, and I think it's showing. I struggled a lot last quarter trying to balance work and school. This quarter I have done very well in my animation class and my character design class. It could just be because I feel much more passionately about these subjects than others I have taken, but I think having a break from work is nice. Plus I wasn't really making money. Which sucked, and it still sucks.

I need an internship. And some coffee.

I am almost officially done with my summer quarter of school! (finally! Just got one more paper to go but that doesn't matter a whole lot) It was a lot of work, but I'm glad it's over and I'm ready for what's next!

Next Quarter:

Mon/Wed: Introduction to 2D animation & Art History

Tues/Thurs: Audio Production & Character and Object Design

I plan on continuing to airbrush as much as possible throughout the winter. I am keeping this as my only job, even though it will be rough. School is my main focus, and I know I can't fall behind.

Other Plans?

Um... not really. However, I've set up a hefty wishlist of stuff I really would like to buy sometime in the future.

A drafting table- there is a sweet one at IKEA with a lightbox and everything! :)
Desktop computer- this is not high priority; I just would like something that can handle 3DS Max so it doesn't take 30 minutes just to render a single pass.
Bicycle- my silly pink bike, I learned, is pretty much a piece of crap. It's slow, out of style (as far as buying parts), and I learned it's from the 80's. She's an antique!
Digital Camera- Of all the things I miss from high school, I miss photography. I hope someday to buy a nice camera, not just a recreational one, so I can get back into photography.

I look at that list and realize I will probably have to sell my kidney. O_o

My 3rd level review- the big sha-bang presentation to my teachers and administrators- was today, and I think it went pretty darn good. :) I'm glad it was over, and I'm proud of what I was able to accomplish. The animation academic advisor, I think, was trying to veer me away from wanting to work for Pixar. He said there are fewer Pixar animators/storyboarders than there are NFL quarterbacks, but I still don't care. It's gonna happen someday, and that's that. It's been my dream for as long as I have been able to draw- it's what made me draw- and I don't think I'll ever give up on it. But enough of my ranting. :D

Of late nothing new has been happening. Just a lot of stress because of my job and school combined. Can't say I'd do it any differently though. I love my job, and it helps me get through school. Next quarter will be better. I have an intro to 2D animation class and a character/object design class. (Joy!) I need to keep drawing. Lately I've just been airbrushing everything, and I think I need to spend some more time drawing instead.

A major portfolio presentation is due coming up in a few weeks and I'm definitely worried about it. Not about my work; I stand behind what I can do. It's just a lot of work to put this thing together in the time I have. That and I have to make a documentary all by myself at the same time.

I feel like a squirrel. My job slows down in winter, so I've been saving up all my money in preparation.

I haven't updated this puppy in a while so here it goes.

Airbrushing is going super well. I love work; I look forward to it every week whether it's training or actual work. Everyone is nice, and I think I'm getting better at airbrushing too. My boss was really happy with my last training stuff, so I'm excited to start working as an artist and make no money whatsoever!

I also did a fun photo shoot with some friends from video class. It was so fun to get wacky (and probably disease-ridden) clothes from Goodwill and just act like goofs for pictures.

nothing else is really new. *sigh* Russel is still afraid of everything, although he really enjoys his food. I think he's getting fatter.

I finally got out of cruddy student housing and into a nice apartment in Loring Park, and so far I love it! It's less than a mile from school which is really nice; I can walk or bike anywhere downtown pretty much. Here's what it looks like. It still needs some color and artwork on the walls.

In addtion, I got a sweet little pet for the new place too :D His name is Russel. He's pretty much afraid of anything that moves or makes noises right now, but I figure he'll grow out of it.

I have been working on this 5 styles project for way too long now and I THINK MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE. On the bright side, it's made me about 100 times better at drawing people.

Anyway, signed my lease at Oak Grove and I'm pumped to move in and away from this shithole they call the Marc. Plus I want a guinea pig. :)

I've also worked twice now at the airbrush stand in MOA and I really like it. I just wish I could start airbrush training soon because it looks so fun!

. . . And tonight I'm going to go see Taking Back Sunday for a second time.... hopefully I won't near-die again.

well that was a quick month. :/ I'm happy that it is finally warm out consistently and I'm able to go take walks and have adventures.

I'm now settled as far as having a place to live. We have furniture and all that jazz, and I'm excited. I'm so done with the whole roommate/college housing experience. It blows more than a beluga whale.

I also have a job for sure now... did I talk about this before? not sure.... But anyway I'm a part time airbrusher/cashier at MOA and Valley Fair. I'm excited to learn airbrushing and have a job finally. It's a huge relief, and I am so grateful that I got a second chance at this job.

School is going well, but lately I've been playing around with the idea of transferring to California. I really want to go for the Pixar internship and work my ass off to get it. I know right now I'm not at the right skill level, but I'm getting there. fast. In the meantime, I really want to start looking at local intern jobs, since I need one to graduate. Pixel Farm seems like an amazing option. In my free time I plan on working up my 3DS Max skills, doing modeling and all that just to get better. I can't afford to fall behind here if I want to reach my goals.

Finally things are going better. As of yesterday, I found a new apartment to live in! It's in Loring Park, an area which I love. (the lake has ducks in it!) 1 bedroom, and it's pretty big. The wall is this awesome lime green color which I think I'll leave it as.

I also now have a job! Starting in 2 weeks, I'll be training as an airbrusher/cashier. At first I was denied this job because of Ai's wonderful registration process, but thankfully I switched my schedule and asked for reconsideration. I can't wait to start airbrushing and see what it's like!

. . . And finally it's getting warm here. Gawd I hate the cold.

Okay, so I guess some people consider blogs somewhat lame. You know,writing about your life assuming someone out there actually cares enough to read about it. So why do I have one? I guess I think a blog would be kind of helpful in my potential art career... to post my work and about my process, etc. etc

As an animation student, I am constantly told about the importance of "networking." I have come to hate that word; it's all just fancy-talk for making friends and talking to people. But my school said a blog wouldn't be such a bad idea.

So here it goes.
